Studying respiratory diseases, such as interstitial lung diseases, remains a major challenge due to the lack of biologically relevant human lung models that can recapitulate disease processes like irreversible fibrosis. To advance drug discovery for respiratory diseases, more comprehensive 3D in vitro models are needed – ones that go beyond the traditional compartmentalized setups and mimic different cell type and vascular interactions, as well as inflammation and matrix remodeling.
