ライフサイエンスとヘルスケアの領域における急速な技術革新によって大きな変化を遂げています．たとえば，新たな診断方法，治療法，ドラッグ・デリバリーの方法，アルゴリズム等を活用した医療，遠隔医療，医療機器，投薬の方法，およびウェルネス管理等においてこの傾向は顕著となっています．一方で，これら技術革新をさらに促進するためには，医学と工学など様々な分野の専門家とのコラボレーションの必要性が指摘されています．
ライフサイエンスとヘルスケアの革新は，患者の経験と健康の向上，および医療費の削減をもたらすと期待されています．しかし，急速な技術革新は，データの所有者，サイバー・セキュリティとプライバシー，法令遵守，その他の社会経済的・倫理的問題といった新たな課題を生み出しています．翻って，これら領域を担う主要な当事者らが所属する医療・医薬品業界およびアカデミアでは，業務や研究対象に対する専門性の高まりから業務・研究のサイロ化といった課題が長らく生じています．先述の期待に応えるためには，当事者らが，専門的な知識や技術だけでなく，業務や研究方法等の変革への着手の要否をも検討する時代にきています．様々な背景を持つ専門家（特に医学および工学）の対話は，これらの課題に対する実用的かつ効果的な解決策として期待されています．
シンポジウムでは，米国のUCサンディエゴと日本の一部の大学の実例を元に，医工連携の課題と機会について議論する予定です．関係者がベストプラクティスを共有し，共同プロジェクトの経験を学び，共同研究のアイデアを交換し，グローバル起業家意識を高め，トランスレーションを加速し，スタートアップ企業やベンチャーキャピタルとの双方向の意見交換を集中的に行い，現在の当該領域に生じている課題の解決に向けた議論が加速することを目的とした最初の共同シンポジウムとなります．
